JOHANNES MOTSCHMANN WAVES AT BOUNDARIES

Today sees Johannes Motschmann unveil the dark, nocturnal title track from his new EP Waves At Boundaries. The EP, recently released via unwaveringly consistent German label Neue Meister, explores four raw and melancholic motifs sculpted by the Berlin-based composer and his accompanying ensemble (comprised of multi-percussionist David Panzl and electronic sound virtuoso Boris Bolles), but no track is quite as arresting as the title track itself. ‘Waves At Boundaries’ is a magical journey through avant-garde soundscapes, musique concrète madness, rich neo-classical orchestration and hard-hitting electronica, created using a diverse array of instrumentation including analogue synthesizers, an old Wurlitzer piano, a Yamaha CP-70, layers of violin and an enviably massive percussion set. It’s a track that surprises at every turn. Speaking of his music, Motschmann has stated "It is important for me that there is a secret in everything I am composing". Given secrets positively abound in ‘Waves At Boundaries’, we’d say Motschmann has more than achieved his goal. -KJ
